AOA Seal of Acceptance

Seal of Acceptance for Computer Glare Reduction Filters

The American Optometric Association (AOA) has established a program to provide evaluation and recognition of quality computer glare reduction filters. Products that meet the minimum specifications established by the AOA Commission on Ophthalmic Standards are allowed to use the AOA Seal of Acceptance in product labeling and marketing.

Category Requirements

Specifications for VDT/computer glare reduction filters cover construction quality, image quality, glare reduction, reflectance and the ability to withstand environmental testing.

To be Accepted, the product sample must meet AOA specifications on the following:

  1. Filter construction — Anti-glare filters shall be designed to minimize any safety hazards which might be associated with their use.
  2. Filter quality — The filter surface shall be uniform in quality and condition, smooth, free from foreign materials, and free from visible optical and physical imperfections.
  3. Image degradation — The filter shall not visually degrade display image quality. (This is measured in five locations-near the center of the filter and near each corner.)
  4. Screen glare reduction — At each of the five measurement locations specified above, the transmittance value shall be within 3 percentage points of the stated value.
  5. Reflectance — The average luminous reflectance of five measurements in the direction of the viewer shall be equal to or less than 1.5%.
  6. Viewing angle — The anti-glare filter shall not cause a change in display luminance of more than 8% when the viewing angle is varied over a specified range.
  7. Environmental testing:
    • Abrasion resistance
    • Coating adhesion
    • Humidity
    • Temperature exposure
