Chief Financial Officer



National organization located in St. Louis, MO is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer for its professional association. The Chief Financial Officer will lead the organization's finances, investments and accounting activities as well as its relationships with financial institutions, regulatory agencies, the financial community and the organization’s members and affiliates. The CFO will oversee and direct planning and development of the organization. The organization includes a tax-exempt professional association, a charitable purpose foundation and a for-profit management services organization. The CFO serves as a member of the Senior Management Team. Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Oversees and directs budgeting, profit and loss, long range forecasting and other fiscal management activities for the Association in accordance with the American Optometric Association’s financial policies and procedures. Coordinates and directs the financial planning, budgeting, procurement and investment activities of all or part of the organization.
  • Identifies and pursues organziational development and growth initiatives, including but not limited to strategic ventures, alliances, and mergers/acquisitions, and works closely with Executive Director and other engaged parties on execution of the initiatives.
  • Serves as financial consultant regarding insurance, taxes, and other specially assigned financial projects. Identifies and accessess specialty resources and expertise, as necessary, to complete these projects.

Successful candidate will possess a minimum of seven years related accounting experience and/or training is required, of which at least half should be at the Chief Financial Officer level of a mid-sized (over $10 million annual budget) or larger organization; or at the Controller level of a large-sized (over $25 million annual budget) organization. Prior experience in/or familiarity with FASB, AICPA and/or OMB accounting standards and guidelines for non-profit organizations (NPOs) is also required. The CFO must possess the ability to understand and explain economic, finance and accounting information, prepare and manage budgets, and make sound long-term investment decisions in managing the organization’s investments in accordance with established policies. Position holder must possess the ability to grasp and understand business concepts and issues; ability to organize and direct a project to completion; ability to communicate clearly and concisely verbally and in writing; and the ability to develop a vision for the future and create a culture in which the long range goals can be achieved. Position holder must be innovative by having the ability to look beyond the standard solutions. Previous management and supervisory experience is required. Travel is required in this position. Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, Masters in Accounting) and/or certified in public accounting (CPA) is preferred. Prior experience in a responsible, decision making role in a progressive, growing professional professional association is also preferred.
