Health Care Reform: Expand Access to Essential Optometric Care

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies recognized optometric care as a basic health service needed by most Americans and included vision care as an essential component of primary care. Unfortunately, Federal government policies and programs often do not fully recognize optometrists or place sufficient emphasis on the importance of preventive eye and vision care. With Congress now considering far-reaching changes to the health care delivery system, access to comprehensive optometric care must be expanded.
